Often times people will pass on a rumor that they have heard and as it goes around from person to person it becomes less of a rumor and more of just general information; this is known as mass hysteria. One example of mass hysteria that spread over a population was the Salem Witch Trials, the rumors were 4 young girls were fraternizing with the devil and this caused panic amongst the town; however, people just believed what they heard rather than thinking about it and realizing that it was an absurd rumor.
