Aromatherapy is "The art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit." It apparently helps with wrinkles, sprains, memory, fear, asthma, depression, motion sickness, insomnia, and stress. How to use is get essential oils, drop some in bath water, sniff from an inhaler and rub it on skin. Broad claims are that smell is the most direct route to the brain. I think its interesting and I believe in some of it but not all. I think oils do help with stress.
You brought up an interesting point that some of it could be true, but not all. I do think it's ridiculous to believe that aromatherapy can have some of those amazing effects that they claim, like curing disease. Even though there is research that shows that aromatherapy has no significant effects, it's interesting to consider that it could have some mild, temporary affects on mood or something like that. I don't personally believe it, but I'm somewhat intrigued by the possibility.
