The company dōTERRA has claimed that their essential oils can be used to cure or prevent disease. In their review, the FDA has determined that several of dōTERRA's essential oils are promoted for conditions that cause them to be classified as drugs. dōTERRA markets through paid consultants/"wellness advocates" for conditions including, but not limited to, viral infections (including ebola), bacterial infections, cancer, brain injury, autism, endometriosis, Grave’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, tumor reduction, ADD/ADHD, and other conditions that are not amenable to self-diagnosis and treatment by individuals who are not medical practitioners. Specifically, their peppermint essential oil is said to help with “Asthma/Congestion", “Autism”, “Bacterial Infections", “Brain Injury”, “Cold Sores", and “Fever”. Thus, it is clear that these claims are promoted for conditions that cause them to be classified as drugs because they are articles intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease. However, with all these claims, there is really no concrete evidence to say that any of these statements and claims are true.
