Learning styles are essentially the concept that everybody
learns differently from one another in different ways. For example, where one
student might retain information better when the teacher is giving a lecture,
another student might learn better by reading a book related to the topic.
There are three different types of learning styles: visual, auditory, and
kinesthetic. While all this might sound reasonable, research on learning styles
says otherwise. In fact, not only have researchers found no correlation between
a student’s performance and catering to their learning style, some researches
believe it could even be detrimental to some students. Out of all the topics we
have covered in this class, this was the one I was most shocked to learn was
untrue. A few of my teachers in high school would often refer to the different
learning styles and in my own experience I’ve also found it easy to work with
something on written paper than being told something.
