The notion of aromatherapy seems quite common these days. I even mildly subscribe to it. I have a room diffuser and lavender pillow mist, however I don't believe all the hype. The idea has become far too sensationalized and exaggerated, like most pseudoscience concepts. I just enjoy the smell, I never really believed in all the hyped up medical benefits. After viewing those videos, it definitely made me think twice about ever purchasing the products again. It is very interesting how aromatherapy in general seems to only be marketed towards women. There were really only women in those videos being treated with aromatherapy. It also seems to be marketed toward the millennial generation. The advertising industry is able to manipulate women more frequently by creating false needs and insecurities. Aromatherapy seems to fall into that category.
Carly,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you say you don't believe all the hype of aromatherapy! I myself am obsessed with peppermint essential out. I spray my room everyday, I spray my pillow, I even spray peppermint oil into my hair and mix it into my foundation when i do my makeup! Sounds nutty, I know. While I do believe that peppermint essential oil has a calming effect on me, I just love anything and everything peppermint.
Carly, I believe as well that Aromatherapy is pseudoscience. The fast thinking involved is the initial smell and whether its appealing or not to an individual. Im not big into essential oils, but I can admit that I love the smell of lavender, regardless if has calming effects.
