I was two years old in the year 2000 so I do not personally remember the year 2000 problem also known as the Y2K problem but when i got older took a fond interest in it. The problem arose because the software systems had no way of distinguishing 1900 from the year 2000. This caused a problem because many programs that dealt with banking, national security etc, relied on the correct date being processed by the computers. The idea of the world ending is not uncommon or new. It is also not widely known why people have predictions of the end of the world. In the past it has been done in the most part to distract the people from the current events such as wars , poverty and pushing political agendas. It was even used to promote hatred of other people and cultures. it makes one wonder if that might be the case today ?
Alex,
ReplyDeleteThis was a great post. I think you raise a good question of whether this phenomenon is promoting hatred of other people and cultures. In our lecture 1 videos, we see a video link of Fox news speaking about Dooms Day and how people were preparing for the end of the world. This went viral and soon became a global movement. Do you think its a form of distraction or do you think people genuinely believe the world will come to an end?
