Dungeon and Dragons is a tabletop roleplaying game that generally involves roleplaying of some sort. Back in its early days, the fact that there was violence and other potential "wrong" actions occurring in the game it was linked to cults. One event which was linked with no evidence was the suicide of a 16-year-old in 1971 who attempted and eventually succeeded in committing suicide. The private detective that was hired mentioned how it may have been possible that the location that he was in may have been from a role-playing game. This in and of its self is not a dangerous thing, but the media as well as many people automatically connected (patternicity) Dungeons and Dragons with suicide and murder increasing the fear and stigma around the game.
