Joan Quigley; White House Astrologer
After the attempted assassination attempt on Ronald Regan in March of 1981, Nancy Regan was understandably shaken up by the thought of her husband's death. As President of the United States, Ronald Regan was exposed to various crowds throughout his term, and Nancy Regan was determined to prevent another attempt at her husbands life. This is where Joan Quigley offered her "abilities", claiming that she could have foreseen the assassination attempt if she were "looking" - this peaked Nancy's interest and subsequently brought her on as the White Houses official Astrologer. When faced with criticism of this move, Nancy Regan defender her actions by saying, "Very few people can understand what it's like to have your husband shot
at and almost die, and then have him exposed all the time to enormous
crowds, tens of thousands of people, any one of whom might be a lunatic
with a gun.... I was doing everything I could think of to protect my
husband and keep him alive.", which can be found in her tell-all "My Turn: The Memoirs of Nancy Regan".

This event in history is a great example at how humans will believe anything just because they feel scared. We will do anything to feel safe again which is why Nancy Regan got the Astrologer to help protect her husband. In my opinion if people would actually do that why didn't they prevent all tragic events like 9/11 or people getting murdered. Great point to bring up!
ReplyDeleteWow! I never knew that! Thank-you for sharing that piece of information. If it was my husband in question, I would absolutely do anything I could to try and protect him. Her fears are valid. Personally, whenever I have fears about the future, I always go to a Tarot Card reader in hopes to find comfort.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both previous comments. It is true that anyone will do anything in their power to help evade and protect a love one from ever getting hurt again. Having an astrologer is more of a security blanket more for Nancy than for her husband Ronald Reagan. The secret service alone mostly likely have learned their lesson from the first assassination attempt. The astrologer would have looked like it was helping the president, but what was really helping the president was the secret service making sure that an assassination attempt was not going to happen again.
ReplyDeleteI look at astrologers from both side, believing them and then there is part of me that does not. I would want to try anything if my husband or children or any member of the family was at a risk. I think you have to be in the moment to know what you are going to do. You have to truly believe and be one with the reader to connect.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a scary thing how much people can be manipulated. All it takes is a fear, and then other people can exploit those fears for their own personal gain. I feel that people believe in the supernatural and paranormal, because they want to feel that they have some control when in actuality we don't.
