A lot of, what I like to call, "old world" superstitions seem to have some very Christian roots.
For example, the idea that crossing underneath a ladder is bad luck comes from the idea that each point of the ladder

- represents part of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit) an crossing underneath one would "break it", thus breaking the Trinity.Throwing spilt salt over your shoulder is meant to be good luck because it blinds the devil on your shoulder, thus stopping you from causing your own bad luck through temptation.
Likewise, the number 7 is supposed to be good luck because it represents the 6 days before and the one day of the Sabbath,
Just as a disclaimer: none of these superstitions are necessarily guaranteed to give you good or bad luck.

ON the the other hand, they aren't guaranteed not to work either. Superstitions are funny that way.
It's interesting to see how these superstitions came about and it sheds a lot lot of light how the "old world" superstitions still have an affect on us today.

I have realized that many of the superstitions from one religion matches another religion's superstitions, also sometimes when doing something to prevent bad luck in one religion is usually asking for bad things in the other religion's superstitions.
