Is Absecon Lighthouse Haunted?

Absecon Lighthouse
Information: The Absecon Light is a coastal lighthouse located at the north end of Atlantic City and it overlooks Absecon Inlet. It is the tallest lighthouse in the state of New Jersey and is the third-tallest masonry lighthouse in the United States. Construction began in 1854, with the light first lit on January 15, 1857. The foundation is constructed from granite blocks, the tower is constructed of brick and iron. The lighthouse towers 171 feet into the air giving the keeper an exceptional view of the inlet.  The lighthouse was deactivated in 1933 and although the light still shines every night, it is no longer an active navigational aid.

Purpose: The purpose of the lighthouse was to guide ships past the Absecon and Brigantine shoals. These shoals had been blamed for multiple ship wrecks which ended with the loss of many lives. Shipwrecks like the one that claimed 145 lives along with the British ship "Mermaid"on March 31, 1779, occurred with frightening frequency. The Absecon Inlet came to be know as "Graveyard Inlet" by mariners due to the high number of shipwrecks and deaths.

Question: Is the Absecon lighthouse haunted? Many people seem to think it is. It is said that at least seven people have died on the property. Could one of the old lighthouse keepers or a family member be wandering around still? Some people think that some of the sailors that lost their lives in the Inlet may be hanging around the light, trying to warn mariners of the dangers in the immediate area.

Point of view: I cannot say if the lighthouse is haunted or not. I would like to do some type of investigation and see if I could collect any evidence to back the many claims of ghosts. The Ghost Hunters team investigated the lighthouse and found some interesting evidence.

  1. Wow I think i've passed this light house so many times when I was little who would have known that it had some cool history behind it! I hope the ghost hunters made another video after the changes were made to the light house. Then that would really take things a step closer towards what is making sounds at the light house, or if its actually haunted.

  2. I have been to the Barnegat Lighthouse before and never this one. After reading the post Id definitely check it out. The one in Barnegat was sweet though it was snowing like crazy on the top and then was nothing but rain by the time it hit the ground. cool.
